The Light of Israel in the Darkness of EgyptText: Exod 10:21-29Date: 3/22/26
Fear of the darkness is one of humanity’s most primal, instinctive fears. Whether it’s a child being put to bed or an adult leaving a lamp on in the living room, we are all afraid of the darkness.

Because of our fear of the dark, the themes of light and darkness is one of the most prominent and one of the richest themes in the Bible. God has “called us out of darkness, and into his marvelous light” (1 Pet. 2:10), and God has “delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the Kingdom of his beloved Son” (Col. 1:13).

In the Ninth Plague, when God brings darkness upon Egypt, it is about something much deeper than our simple fear of the dark. And yet, even in the midst of Egypt’s darkness, God’s people Israel still have light — a light that even the darkness cannot put out.

The Fear of the LORD

Sermon Title: The Fear of the LORD
Text: Exod 9:13-30
Date: 3/8/26
The fear of the LORD is one of the most fascinating themes in all of Scripture. On the one hand, Proverbs 1:7 says, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,” And yet, on the other hand, 1 John 4:18 says that “perfect love casts out fear.” In fact, the most frequent command in the Bible is “do not fear.” But we are told, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.”

Obviously, from the Bible’s point-of-view, there is a good kind of fear, and a bad kind of fear; a right way to fear God and a wrong way to fear God. But how can you tell the difference? What does it mean to truly fear the LORD?

That’s what this seventh plague is about. This text warns us against three versions of wrong fear — No Fear, Indifferent to Fear, and Fear of Consequences — in order for us to have a healthy, true fear of God.
