Love Your Enemies

It's one of the coolest experiences as a parent to see your children begin to imitate you. The word imitation is not explicitly used in Matthew 5:38-48, but the concept it present throughout this text: Jesus says, "Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you." Why? "So that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven." He concludes it, "You therefore must be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect."

 

So, how are we to imitate God? This text gives three answers.

1. What we are not to do;
2. What we are to do; and
3. What we will one day become.
